AI Lab Welcomes Cuban Researchers Yailen Martinez Jimenéz and Jessica Coto Palacio

The AI Lab is proud to welcome the Cuban researchers Yailen Martinez Jimenéz and Jessica Coto Palacio in our institute and assist them in their research. They work together with Ann Nowé, the head of the Artificial Intelligence Lab, on the research titled ‘Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Tool for Job Shop Scheduling Problems’. The project focuses on minimising the time required to complete all tasks in scheduling scenarios.

They compare the performance of two alternatives for optimizing the schedule once the user has fixed some operations; the classical left shifting and a modified Q-Learning algorithm, which includes the position of the fixed operations in the learning process. This research addresses the technological developments which have been increasingly implemented in industry performance. Together with the new information technologies, intelligent factories have emerged, often referred to as Industry 4.0 (i4.0). This revolution combines intelligent and adaptive systems employing shared knowledge among diverse heterogeneous platforms for computational decision-making.

Careers

Jessica Coto Palacio, a former Master’s student of Jimenéz completed her studies in computer sciences.  Now they work together with on this specific project which has benefitted from a long-standing collaboration between the Artificial Intelligence Lab and at the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas. Jimenéz first came to VUB in 2007 to acquire her Master’s degree in computer science. After, she continued working with the Artificial Intelligence Lab and received her PhD. At the time, she worked on generic multi-agent reinforcement learning approach for scheduling problems paving her way to her current focus. Since she has left the VUB she became the head of the computer science department at the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas. Although, she now lives in Cuba, Jimenéz maintains a professional relationship with our Lab. Hence, she has visited our institute on various occasions with an academic purpose, for instance during her post-doctoral research.
