How Do Jazz Musicians Manage to Play Together?

Using a piano, audio and video clips of some of my groups and other bands and some fellow jazz musicians I'll aim to talk about the ways in which jazz musicians manage to play with each other. This includes real-time negotiations on the next song, the key, the chord structure, the feel, the tempo, the intro, the order of improvisation, whether to use drum breaks, when to play the tune again and - perhaps most difficult or all - how to stop together. I'll even talk about what happens when jazz musicians are not managing to play together and strategies for recovery.
