Music & language (representation)

Research Question

Music consists of many layers and interdependencies which makes it a structurally very complex construct. Finding a novel computational representation that grasps all its sensitivities is object of this thesis.

Background

A lot of the existing computational representations of music (HMM's, n-grams, ...) fail to grasp the complex interactions and multi-level hierarchical phenomena that make music interesting.

Inspired by the work done in the field of language, semantics and grammars during the last decade (like FCG), this thesis focuses on the similarities and differences between language and music and aims to investigate whether linguistic formalisms can be applied to music.
