In this chapter we have presented descriptions of three generic models based on descriptions of role limiting methods. Now that we have introduced the diferent generic models is is useful to discuss the their similarities and differences.
The first distinction that becomes apparent is the destinction between `theory' based and `case' based problem solving. C&D and P&R build up explanatory structure by the use of a single theory, ESC applied previously solved cases plus small extrapolation theories.
C&D and P&R have different approaches in building up the solution. In P&R one solution is proposed (the initial design) and this solution is refined by propose and revision operators. In C&D several small solutions are available which are selected and tested until one single solution remains valid. Therefore C&D requires the availability of applicable solutions indexed by features, while P&R requires the availability of solution modification operators and theory evaluation mechanisms.
