Katrien Beuls: Past
I obtained an MA in Linguistics and an MSc in Speech and Language Processing at the Universities of Leuven (Belgium) and Edinburgh (U.K.). In my MA thesis I looked at the expression of subjectivity from a cross-linguistic vantage point by studying the use of discourse markers in a corpus of Big Brother conversations (Spain and U.K.). My MSc thesis investigated the classification algorithms Balanced Winnow and SVM for the automatic categorization of patent documents. In the Summer of 2009 I spent three months at the Information Retrieval Facility in Vienna to carry out this research. A paper on this work was presented at the DIR2010 conference (25/01/2010) at the Radboud University of Nijmegen.
